During the rule of the Ottoman Empire, this government unilaterally introduced the Persian Gulf as the Gulf of Basra. Because Basra was the largest city of the empire near this bay, due to the power of the Ottoman Empire, this issue caused a few European cartographers to use this name to capture the heart of the Ottoman Empire. However, the Ottoman government itself did not believe much in the name of the Gulf of Basra and in some of its plans used the name of the Persian Gulf. An example of this can be seen in the book General Ottoman History, which was published in 1329 AH during the Qajar period. With the fall of the Ottoman Empire, the name of the Gulf of Basra was forgotten forever. Ottoman printing maps use both the Gulf of Basra and the Persian Gulf, and they seem to have believed in using the name of the Persian Gulf.
